Dear Friend,

April’s Orton Farmers’ Market (Saturday 11 April) will feature the usual wide range of local food and drink heroes as well as visitors from Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team.

“Orton village sits on the boundary of two local Mountain Rescue teams, Penrith and Kirkby Stephen” says Market Co-ordinator, Leanne Duerden, “but the Market Hall is within the Kirkby Stephen area so we’re really pleased that members are able to come along this month and talk to our visitors about their work.”

“These volunteers are very much local heroes.  We’re not quite sure whether they’ll have a Land Rover ambulance or a search dog with them at the Market but, if so, I am expecting them to be quite a distraction.  A lot of our visitors travel from outside of the immediate area so this will be a chance to them to find out how this 24/7 and 100% voluntary rescue service works.”

A recent change at Orton Farmers’ Market has been the range of sausage sarnies and seasonal soups on offer in the Market Hall.  Cumberland sausage from John Noble at Stoneyhead Farm has been a favourite but Wild Boar and Apple from Sillfield Farm Foods was also popular in March.

“The range of sausage has been great and we’ve been able to feature several of our meat farmers,” says Leanne.  “We’ve sold out of soup each month and I am working on recipes to make the most of what’s local and in season and with ingredients available on the Market too.”
