Come to a celebration of local sheep breeds and their wool – Orton Farmers’ Market (Saturday 13 July)

11/07/2013

The July Farmers’ Market at Orton (Saturday 13 July) will be a celebration of local sheep breeds and of their wool as the shearing season is in full swing.

Market regulars from Raisgill Hall, Steve Dunning and his son, Michael hope to be demonstrating sheep shearing (or clipping) during the morning – weather and sheep permitting – and, inside the Market Hall, members of The Wool Clip cooperative from Caldbeck will be demonstrating their craft skills and selling their woollen creations.

“Sheep are at the heart of the farming economy around Orton,” says Market Co-ordinator, Leanne Duerden, “so we try to focus on them for at least one market each year.  Steve and his wife, Barbara, are regulars on the Market with their Raisgill Hall lamb and he hopes to bring some of the flock into the village for the demonstrations.  The shearing usually draws a crowd and visitors love to see the animals before and after clipping.”

As well as all kinds of meat and poultry – from lamb and beef to pork and venison – Orton Farmers’ Market has over 35 stalls selling a wide variety of local produce and the village also has a craft gallery at Silver Yard that features work from local designer makers.

Also appearing at the market this Saturday are the lovely Alpacas from Why Not Alpacas.

Orton Farmers’ Market opens at 9.30am and runs until 2pm on Saturday 13 July and there will be refreshments available throughout the day in the Market Hall, at All Saints’ Church and also at Silver yard Café Deli, Kennedy’s Chocolates café and The George Hotel.

Orton Farmers’ Limited was set up as a community enterprise company and has been operating as an accredited monthly Farmers’ Market in Orton since 2001, winning the National Farmers’ Market of the Year Award in 2005.  The Market happens on the second Saturday of every month and can include up to 40 different stallholders, all of them coming from within a 50 mile radius of Orton and many of them from the immediate community, including local farmers.  See www.ortonfarmers.co.uk for details.

Many Orton producers are also involved in the Orton@Rheged market on the last Sunday of each month – the next one of these will be on Sunday 28 July.

Annual Christmas Farmers’ Market Saturday 8 December

07/12/2012

Dear friend,

There’ll be a seasonal flavour to Orton on Saturday 8 December as the annual Christmas Farmers’ Market takes over the village and gets visitors into the mood to eat, drink and be merry.

As well as the best of local meat, fish, vegetables, cheese and preserves, there will be Christmas cakes, puddings and other baking treats for all tastes, from the traditional to the more unusual with The Pudding Room, Country Fare and Broughton Village Bakery all bringing their best to the Market.

Local farmer, Lanty Wharton will be selling a selection of

Christmas trees and there will also be a selection of local Christmas drinks with wonderful fruit wines from High Cup Winery and a selection of warming cordials from Kendal Cordials, including Spiced Apple, Strawberry and Pepper and warming Ginger varieties.

Ron and Angela Barker have been making wine up at High Cup Nick near Appleby since 2007 and they will be launching their 2012 Spiced Beetroot wine at Orton Christmas Farmers’ Market.

“This wine is sweetened and spiced and ready for serving as a warm winter drink,” says Ron, “and it could be especially welcome on a cold Christmas

Day morning!”

“December’s Orton Farmers’ Market always feels really Christmassy,” says Market Co-ordinator, Leanne Duerden, “and there are plenty of opportunities to shop for food, pick up locally-made gifts and even choose a tree and other decorations.”

“We’ll have music from Appleby Silver Band on the market square adding to the atmosphere with traditional Christmas music, a visit from Santa and there will be carol singers from Orton C of E Primary School up in church too.”

Orton Farmers’ Christmas Market opens at 9.30am and runs until 2.30pm on Saturday 8 December. There’ll be carol singing and refreshments in All Saints’ Church, free mince pies and a visit from Santa in the market place and also speciality hot chocolate at Kennedy’s fine chocolates. Full details are online at www.ortonfarmers.co.uk.

Other markets before Christmas include Brampton and Brough on Saturday 15 December and, closest to Christmas of them all, Penrith Farmers’ Market on Tuesday 18 December.

Apple theme to Orton Farmers’ Market on Saturday 13 October

09/10/2012

Apple pressing by NCOG

There will be an Autumnal feel and a definite apple theme to Orton Farmers’ Market on Saturday 13 October.

Visitors will have an opportunity to get their apples identified by members of the North Cumbria Orchard Group (NCOG) and, if they bring their windfalls along with some containers, there’s a chance to make their own fresh apple juice with the NCOG press.

“This apple event, especially the windfall juicing, has proved really popular in recent years,” says Leanne Duerden, Market Co-ordinator.  “The added benefit is that the pulp won’t be wasted either but will go as animal feed to local farmers who trade on the Market!”

Also, we welcome back the popular WhyNot Alpacas and their four legged friends with warm clothes ready for this winter!  Plus, warm your cockles with Ron and Angela Barker’s High Cup Wines!
The Market features up to 35 local food, drink and craft producers, all of them based within 50 miles of Orton and several of them living within just a couple of miles of the village.  As well as top quality meat (lamb, pork, venison, veal, beef and meat products), there will also be local eggs, preserves, bread, cakes and smoked fish alongside herbs, oils, fruit and vegetables, granola, chocolates and much more.

Best wishes

Leanne
